Extended Flex Alert issued for Today, Thursday, September 8

Extension made to avoid rolling outages by conserving energy

As Southern California enters a ninth straight day of record-setting heat Thursday, the state’s power regulators are hoping to continue their streak of avoiding rolling blackouts, asking all residents to conserve electricity during the hours of 3 to 10 p.m., extending the previous Flex Alerts by two hours.

The California Independent System Operator extended a Flex Alert for the ninth consecutive day Thursday, urging residents to take the following power-saving steps:

    • Setting thermostats to 78 degrees or higher.
    • Avoiding the use of major appliances.
    • Turning off unnecessary lights.
    • Avoid charging electric vehicles.

Residents were also advised to pre-cool their homes as much as possible and close blinds and drapes to keep interiors cool.

To minimize discomfort and help with grid stability, consumers are also encouraged to
pre-cool their homes and use major appliances before 4 p.m., when solar energy is
    typically abundant.

The City of Goleta wants to remind the public that the Goleta Valley Library (500 N. Fairview Ave) is available as a Cooling Center during its regular operating hours. Hours of operation are:

    • Tuesday-Thursday 10 am-7 pm
    • Friday & Saturday 10 am-5:30 pm
    • Sunday 1 pm-5 pm
